Joshua 6:5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in."
Soon after the Children of Israel
were set free from their servitude in Egypt, God was preparing them to enter
the Land promised them through their forefather Abraham. However, because of
the Israelites' distrust in God, they wandered in the wilderness until that
generation had passed away.
An eleven-day trip turned into a
forty-year wilderness wandering. After four decades of wandering around in the
wilderness, God chose Joshua to lead the people across the Jordan River in the
Promised Land. The first City to be conquered was Jericho, with its towering
city walls. It was said that the City's wall was so thick that two chariots
could run side by side on top of the walls. The Commander of God's Army spoke
to Joshua and assured him that God was in control, and the City would be theirs
(Joshua 5:14).
There were no conventional
weapons used in the Battle; God told them to march around the City once for six
days (Joshua 6:3). When they had marched around the city seven times
on the seventh day, as God had commanded, the priest sounded the trumpets, the
people shouted, and the walls came tumbling down (Joshua
6:4-5).
Some folks wonder just what the
Battle of Jericho has to do with my life here in the 21st century. It indicates
the same thing that it meant to the Israelites at Jericho. The Battle was not
theirs to win; the Battle was God's Battle. In the same manner, the many
battles we have to fight with Satan's evil are not our battles; they are God's
battles. God will sometimes use conventional means to carry out His will for
our lives; however, at other times, He will employ very unconventional methods.
God carried out His part in Jericho's Battle, and the great wall crumbled at
His command. After that, the people were to carry out their function in the
Battle, they were to go up and take the City.
Our role in the battles that God
is fighting for us is to trust Him and stand on God's reliable promises. Our
part in the Battle is to trust that God knows better than we do concerning how
our battles will turn out. Although we cannot see tomorrow, God can, and He
knows just what tomorrow will bring. We are to place our faith and trust in the
Word of God and follow the leading, guiding, and direction of His Holy Spirit.
This action on our part will
bring honor and glory to God in the face of His enemies, recognizing His
authority. At the same time, it will serve to strengthen our relationship with
our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, who gave his life so that we can know life
eternal.
