Bible Verse of the Day Friday February 5th 2021

Romans 15:14 I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with knowledge and competent to instruct one another.

One of the definitions of the word “goodness” is kindness; Paul explains this precept in his letter to the Ephesians (Ephesians 4:31-32). The bottom line to this is to forgive one another just as Christ has forgiven us. Our forgiveness from Christ Jesus came with a price paid by Him, the sacrifice He made on the Cross of Calvary. His forgiveness is unconditional; there is nothing that we could ever do that would qualify us to receive His forgiveness. It is sometimes challenging to forgive every trespass against us unconditionally, but that is what the Bible teaches us. This concept brings us to another meaning of “goodness,” which is righteousness (Romans 3:10).

Since none of us have any righteousness in and of ourselves, the only righteousness we know is the righteousness of Christ Jesus. To be “full of goodness,” we must have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God. Our filling with His Holy Spirit is in direct proportion to our surrender to Christ Jesus. Being filled with the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with high emotions, passion, or excitement; it has everything to do with obedience to God (John 14:15, John 15:14).  The goodness spoken of here leads us to the later phase of the verse, which is the knowledge and competence to instruct each other.

As stated earlier in this writing, being filled with the Holy Spirit is all about surrender, and the more we surrender to Christ Jesus, the more we want to know about Him and what He has to say to us. He speaks to everyone the same way, through His Holy Word. At times, he will place certain people in each other’s path and orchestrate a situation to be of service to someone when they need it the most.

This knowledge and competence comes only through an in-depth study of God’s Word, and the goodness spoken of here is the entry to the pathway of gaining that knowledge and competence. Jesus is the light of the world, and He will light the pathway so that you might gain the blessings of helping each other. Not only through physical and spiritual assistance but help each other learn more about Jesus and His gospel.

We are all sinners, blemished and imperfect, but Paul reminds us here in this verse of the importance of reaching out to someone, in whatever their need. We all have needed physical and spiritual encouragement at times; additionally, we all need the input of God’s Word in our everyday walk. We should not attempt to live in a world of isolation; we should strive to help one another both spiritually and physically, as well as in the pursuit of the knowledge of the Word of God. Let us hold each other up for strength as we look for the coming of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.
