Matthew 6:27 Can anyone of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
There can be nothing accomplished through worrying. There
will not be one hour added to our lives by worrying, on the contrary, there
could be time taken off our lives because of anxiety and worry. Worry itself
will not cut short our time here on earth but it can lead to physical ailments,
high blood pressure that can lead to heart attacks and strokes, that will
shorten the time God has designated for us here in this life. Sin is sin of
course, and worry is no greater or lesser than any other sin, but there are few
that are as self-destructive and inept. Worry is also a sign of distrust in
God, who has promised to supply our every need (Philippians 4:19).
Life can be overwhelming at times, and worry is a common
temptation; furthermore, it has become a chosen pursuit for too many. When a
Christian engages in worry, they are saying, I believe that God can redeem my
soul, wash away my sins by the blood of Christ Jesus, redirect my eternal
destination from hell to heaven, but I do not trust and believe He can get me
through the next few days. It seems a bit unreasonable when we think about it
from that standpoint; we trust God for the eternal gifts, but not for the
smaller day-to-day gifts. It does not seem reasonable that one would say I
believe that the Bible is the true Word of God and not believe all the
thousands of promises contained within its pages.
The bad news is that when you worry you do not trust God’s
faithfulness. The primary reason for this is you might not know enough about
Him, but do not worry, the good news is that there is an effectual and
efficient remedy for this. Spend time every day of your life studying the Word
of God, it might be a good idea to get involved in a regular weekly Bible study
class. When you get into His Word you will learn more about God and who He
really is. There will be many examples of how He supplied the needs of His
people in the past, which will bring confidence to the future.
Allot a regular time frame each day to study God’s Holy
Word. Otherwise, Satan will find his way into the void left in your mind and
begin to tempt you to worry about everything that comes down the pike. Allow
God’s track record from the past and in your own experience to reassure you
that worry is a senseless endeavor.
Christ Jesus does not change; He is the
same today as He was yesterday and will be the same forever (Hebrews 13:8).
This means that He will be doing the same things today that He did yesterday.
If there is any question in your mind about what He will do today and into the
future, just look to the past. Then ask yourself this question: Did He ever
sustain me in the past? The answer will
be yes, and He will sustain you into the future and for an eternity.
