Psalm 55:22 Cast your cares on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
Every time you visit a
website on the internet, there is always a tiny fragment from the site left on
your computer’s hard drive. It’s called browsing history, temporary internet
files, or cookie files, and over time it can build up until the unused part of
your drive becomes smaller than the used section. The result of this can be a
much slower and less efficient computer. Many programs keep the Hard Drive
cleared off; I use one called “Windows Clean-up,” and there is a place on the
control panel in windows that can keep it somewhat cleared off. Without
clearing off the drive periodically, the computer would become more and more
crowded over time until it finally crashes.
Our lives are like the computer in some ways; we load more and more responsibilities, work, and commitment on ourselves and never cast them off. We try to resolve every burden and issue that comes our way until the buildup becomes so immense that we feel like we might crash. Some of the signals that our “hard drive” may be getting so filled that a crash may be imminent are not being able to sleep, becoming exasperated or annoyed at any minor little thing, and becoming distressed or uneasy. If we are experiencing some of these symptoms, it may be time for some clearing off.
The Lord will never put more on us than we can take, but sometimes we pile burdens and responsibilities on ourselves unnecessarily, and it may be time to clear off some of these activities. As the Psalmist reminds us from our text today, we can cast our burdens on the Lord, and He will sustain us. The problem arises when we cast our burdens on the Lord and then try to help Him resolve the issues that have besieged us. We are told in the scriptures to “cast all our anxiety” on the Lord, not some of it, and try to resolve the rest ourselves (1 Peter 5:7).
We should allow the Lord to carry our burdens, but sometimes we are like the fellow carrying a 50-pound sack of potatoes when a man in a pickup truck offered him a ride to town. After a while, the driver of the truck noticed the man still had the sack of potatoes on his back; he said, “you could put the sack on the floor of the truck,” to which the fellow replied, “you gave me a ride I couldn’t expect you to carry the heavy sack of potatoes too.”
When we ask Christ Jesus to sustain us, and He will, then we try to carry some of the burdens ourselves; we are just like the man unnecessarily carrying the sack of potatoes in our story (Matthew 11:28). If your wagon is bogging down, then throw off some unnecessary baggage. Bring your cares, burdens, and anxiety to the Lord and allow Him to sustain you and “leave it at the altar”!
