Matthew 4:21-22 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Fishing is something that many people like to do; folks look forward to relaxing and spending some time out on the water. However, for Jesus’ future disciples, fishing was not some relaxing day away from work; it was their work, it is how they made their living. When Jesus called them, James and John straightaway and instantaneously let go of everything. They turned their backs on the way of the world through which they made their living. They left their father, their business and immediately began to follow Jesus. They gave up the only way they knew how to make a living and became vital players in spreading the gospel of Christ Jesus to the ends of the earth.
We have careers
that necessitate a more significant portion of our time and concentration. What
Jesus wants to do is intervene in the status quo of our everyday business
because He is calling us to become a part of His business. When he called out
His disciples, Jesus did not change their profession, they were still to be
fishermen, but now they would fish for people (Matthew
4:19).
The way of the world and how we are
programmed in our society is that we should make something of our lives and
then follow Jesus. That is not God’s Way, He calls on us to “leave our boat”
and follow Him and He will make something of our lives. He changed what the
disciples would be fishing for as He readjusts our preference to allow us to
feel the needs of those around us. There is a contemporary praise Hymn called
“Use me, Lord,” and in the song, there is a line that says, “Lord help me to
feel their needs”. Christ Jesus also resets our sights so that we see more
clearly the eternal instead of the temporal.
