Hebrews 2:17 For this reason, he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
The Bible does not
tell of many things that Jesus had to do. Jesus had to die on the Cross to
atone for your sins and mine, and to do that; He had to become fully human
while remaining fully God. This sacrifice was so that He could become our
faithful High-Priest, who not only atoned for your sins and mine but was also
the sacrifice made for our sins.
The High-Priest of Israel interceded for the people, which happened on the "Day of Atonement" (Leviticus 16:3; 23:26-27). Jesus became our High-Priest for this reason, as we see John the Baptist introduces Jesus to the world as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). The Jewish converts to Christianity would have recognized this concept as Jesus as our High Priest. One day a year, the Jewish High priest would enter the Most Holy place of the temple; it was only this one person and only once a year to offer a sacrifice for the people's sins (Leviticus 16). When Jesus said, "it is finished" and breathed his last breath as God in the flesh, from the Cross of Calvary, the veil that separated the Most Holy place and the rest of the temple was destroyed from top to bottom (Matthew 27:50-51). This previously Holy place was no longer needed because God dwells in the hearts and souls of all of His followers through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
He was made like us, fully human, experiencing hunger, thirst, pain, and criticism. Our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, experienced the life that we experience. He was "a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God." Someone that shows mercy would have to identify with the pain and misery of someone else. Jesus was faithful in the sense that He was true to his calling as a mediator between God and humanity. Christ Jesus satisfied the sin issue with almighty God. So, God is satisfied with the sin matter among humanity; God is willing to have communion with all people that have accepted Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior, accepted the sacrifice of Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary for their sins (Romans 3:25; 1 John 4:10). Since Christ Jesus did not succumb to sin in His earthly life, we as His followers and believers can resist the allurement and provocation of iniquity and immorality from Satan and his evil followers. We can live a life of victory filled with joy and contentment all because of the greatest act of love ever known to humankind, the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary.
