Judges 6:23 But the Lord said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.”
An angel of God spoke
to Gideon, who had serious doubts that he was the right person to lead the
Children of Israel into battle against the Midianite army. Gideon was held up
in a winepress hiding from the Midianites. He came up with every excuse he
could think of to cower away from the mission God had called him to, which was
to save the Israelites out of the hands of the Midians. Many years before this,
God had chosen another man to save the Children of Israel from bondage in
Egypt, and Moses came up with every excuse that he could think of to keep from
following this directive from God. Both of these, Moses and Gideon, were
inflicted with low esteem and did not believe they were the right people for
the job God had called them.
The Bible is full of stories of doubtful people who could carry out the mission God had called them to. These are the very people that God uses to carry out His Master plan. We see God telling Gideon to have peace about this calling and not be afraid, and this mandate from God is seen many times throughout the Bible. God will always choose someone who knows they can’t do what God is calling them to do on their own; God is seeking our availability, not our ability.
When God calls us to do something, He does not intend for us to do it on our own, alone. All work in God’s kingdom is done best in partnership and participation. In true Kingdom of God fellowship, we stand together in the directive left to all Children of God at the ascension of Christ Jesus (Acts 1:8). We all have different gifts to spread the gospel, and God plans that they all work together as a beautiful symphony. When God commissioned Zerubbabel to rebuild the Temple, he was not to do it alone. In the writings of the Prophet Haggai, we see that God called on Haggai to speak to Zerubbabel, Joshua, son of Jozadak, and all the people. God tells them to be strong because He was with them.
Even if we surrender ourselves totally to Christ Jesus, sometimes there will be mountains to climb to complete our task from God. However, if we stay focused on our inability and God’s ability, we will achieve the mission that God has called us to do. Those that fear God have nothing to fear from the world. God told Gideon not to be afraid, that he would not die, and that we have that same promise (John 11:25-26; John 3:16).
