Hebrews 2:18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
The advantage to us is
that the suffering Jesus endured during His temptation makes it possible for
Him to minister to our suffering, when Satan comes after us. The issue is not
the suffering that Jesus endured, although He did undergo much suffering, but
the fact that His temptation came in His suffering.
Christ Jesus did not give in to the temptation of Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), nor did he circumvent or avoid any trial or suffering during His earthly ministry, right up to and including His suffering on the Cross (Matthew 16:21-22). Jesus can give support to others because He faced the same tribulations that we go through (Hebrews 4:16; 5:2). As Christ Jesus triumphed over sin in His life, the believer is not compelled to sin. Thanks to the Work of Christ Jesus on the Cross, we can withstand solicitation to evil.
Because he went through temptation, He can identify with the pain we suffer when we are under attack from Satan. Our Lord and Savior did not just suffer on our behalf, but He suffered with us. Jesus is always prepared to come to our aid in times of troublesome hardships that may tempt us to seek other means of support. Our Lord and Savior is fully aware of the depression, fear, and anxiety that floods our souls during times of temptation, so run to the only source of comfort available to humankind, Christ Jesus. There is another message in this verse that can bring great comfort to every follower and believer in Christ Jesus, those adopted into the family of God, and that is we can always be sure of the love, mercy, and grace of God. We can also be assured and know beyond any shadow of a doubt that He will never leave or forsake us.
A story was told of a young child’s lifeless body that washed up on a shore during a great storm many years ago. It was before the days of DNA and mass world communication, so consequently, the child’s identity remained a mystery. The child’s delicate body was taken to the village church and buried, accompanied only by the tears of strangers. Nobody knew what inscription to put on the tombstone, and there was great concern among the inhabitants of the small rural hamlet. That is until someone came up with the only wording possible; it read: “God Knows.” There is no storm too violent, no tempest too ferocious, no suffering in temptation too great by which we cannot say: “God knows,” and rest assured that He will never leave or forsake us in this life and life eternal.
