Acts 1:7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.
Some declarations and assertations surface every few years that talk about the exact time Jesus is coming back. Edgar Whisenant, a NASA engineer, wrote two books, one entitled “88 Reasons Jesus Is Coming Back in 1988!” and “On Borrowed Time.” Mr. Whisenant mailed out 300,000 books free of charge to pastors all across the country. His books went on to sell 4.5 million copies. Oh, and by the way, in case you did not notice, Jesus did not return in 1988.
These date-setting predictions
people made down through the centuries have always been wrong. The first such
false prophecy came somewhere around 95 AD. Down through the ages, these
self-proclaimed prophets, good-hearted pastors, and sham artists have stated in
print and voice media that Jesus is coming on some specific date. All of these
Narratives have one thing in common; they are all wrong. Our Lord and Savior
Christ Jesus let us know in no uncertain terms that not one person on earth
will ever know the exact date that he is coming back (Matthew 24:36). Some of
these charlatans justify their untrue date setting by saying, “well, I may not
be aware of the day or the hour, but I can get awfully close to the specific
date of the return of Jesus.” Seemingly,
that is not the case.
One justification for God not
letting us know when our Savior will return is He wants us to be an example of
how to live by faith to the lost souls of the World. God desires that we
witness to the lost in our communities and become involved in our local
churches. There is one common thread to date setting; people sometimes stop
participating in the World around us.
Another danger of false date setting is that it causes people to
disregard the final words of Jesus as He was about to ascend back to heaven (Acts
1:8).
If our heavenly Father had
wanted us to be aware of the exact date that His Son, our Lord and Savior Christ
Jesus would be returning, He would have included it in His Holy Word. Since
that is not the case, and the complete opposite is true, God has His reasons
for us not to be aware of the date that He set in His time. If we choose to
live each day like tomorrow might be the day when he does come back, we will
always live in a state of readiness when He does return to earth. We can,
however, rest assured of one solid truth, He is coming back.
