Ephesians 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession —to the praise of his glory.
There are three steps talked about in this verse, that is hearing, believing, and marked with the seal of the Holy Spirit. The first step to becoming a Child of God, a saved believer, and a follower of Christ Jesus is hearing the Gospel. There is only one source of the Gospel of Christ Jesus: The Bible, God’s Holy Word. Many people out there today do not seek out the Word of God from the Bible but depend on someone else telling them what the Bible says. This lack of bible study can lead to false teachings because some might want to pervert the Gospel for their own sake. Most of the time, the primary reason for this is greed and pride. If every Christian read and studied their Bibles daily, there would be fewer false teachings because the false teachers would not get away with their lies and deceits. In this verse, Paul states that “when you hear the real truth,” it is the truth found only in the Word of God. How will you be sure what you hear from someone you depend on to tell you the truth, is the truth of the Gospel, without knowing and understanding what the Bible teaches. The first step to guaranteeing our inheritance in the Kingdom of God is hearing the truth of the Gospel.
Next, you must believe the truth of what you read in the Bible. There are so many that want to take a verse here and there in the Bible, put them together out of context, and propagate a lie to promote their own version of the Gospel. Don’t be fooled into falling for this snare of Satan; the less you know about Christ Jesus from the truth of the Gospel, the easier Satan can get you onboard his evil train. Romans 10:9-10 tells us that we must believe with our hearts to be saved. The heart here is symbolic of our entire being, physical and spiritual. If you take someone’s word for what you find in a flight instruction manual and they give you a perverted version of the instructions’, you might get the plane off the ground but coming in for a landing, you would most likely crash and burn. The only way of “guaranteeing our inheritance” into the Kingdom of God so as not to crash and burn is having the unmitigated, absolute, and complete truth of the Gospel of Christ Jesus. The only way you can be sure that you have this truth is to spend time in the Word yourself.
