2 Samuel 7:28 Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
This beautiful passage of scripture
penned by David in this exquisite prayer is an excellent example for us to
follow in our daily prayer life. God had bestowed such great blessings on the
house of David that it led him to say: "Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what
is my family, that you have brought me this far?" (1 Samuel 7:18). God had chosen David to be the King of the
great nation of Israel, and David wanted to build a temple to the Lord. God
told David that Solomon would be the one to build the temple (2 Samuel
7:12-13). Despite this, God, in His love, mercy, and grace, was building up
David's house so his ancestral line and royal lineage would last for eternity.
Our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus would be the definitive and last King of
Kings, that would sit upon the throne of David. However, this would come in
God's time, not in any earthly calendar. This ascension of Christ Jesus to the
throne fulfilled God's perfect plan from before time on earth began.
The promised Messiah, which
was first spoken of in Genesis 3:15, was to come into the world as a newborn
baby as the King of Kings. The true promised Messiah would be the final Prophet
and High Priest and would be the Savior of the world. This great honor and
distinction were not bestowed on David because of his admirable life or
military accomplishments. Over his lifetime David had fallen into several traps
of Satan, including but not limited to adultery and murder. The one thing that
did cause David to stand out in God's sight was that he trusted God with all of
his heart, mind, body, and soul. Furthermore, David believed the Word of God to
be the ultimate truth. Consequently, God chose David to be the one through
which His name and nature would be revealed and exhibited to a lost, dark, and
dying world, desperately in need of salvation.
We must do more than disjoin
ourselves from worldly values and standards; we must learn more and more about
God’s system of ideals and morals as each day passes. As God’s Word apprehends
our hearts, minds, and souls, as it did in the life of David, it will transform
our lives into surrendered servants of God through Christ Jesus. The hope that
we have through Christ Jesus of life eternal is the foundation and framework we
construct our work for the Lord. The confidence by which we are sure of eternal
life is the impetus for our service to our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus and
others.
