Psalm 36:5-9 Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, LORD, preserve both people and animals. How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light, we see light.
The characteristics and powers of God are priceless, and His love for us will never end. As long as this life endures and we are in this sinful world, we can never even attempt to understand the full scope of God's love and power. Though we can try to describe God's loving-kindness with the most prominent words, the most extravagant expressions possible, we are still left short. And what we'll experience once we're face to face with Jesus exceeds our ability to describe while living in this fallen world. Through faith, we are joint-heirs with Christ and adopted into the family of God. David wrote this Psalm as he pondered God's faithfulness and His goodness compared to humankind's wickedness.
David correctly marveled that though we are fallen humanity, all of whom are dead in our trespasses and sin, God loves us anyway. Moreover, all those who place their trust and faith in Jesus can receive salvation and experience the loving-kindness of the Lord as we come into a close relationship with Him through faith. In David's case, he placed his faith and trust in the promise of the coming Messiah, where we put our faith and trust in Christ Jesus, the Promised Messiah, that came to save the world.
David explains this personal and close relationship with our Lord and Savior as being under the shadow of His wings, symbolic of the total protection from Christ Jesus. Jesus spoke of this one time when He was lamenting over Jerusalem (Matthew 23:37). David or any other human writer could never find the words to express the Love of God; however, David is attempting to describe the Love of God shown to those that put their faith and trust in Christ Jesus and no other. There are no words in any human language that can fully convey what it will be like when we are in the presence of Christ Jesus. However, God did give us one example of the glory of heaven, the ultimate evidence of His great love, grace, and mercy, Christ Jesus, our Lord, and Savior. Jesus, the incarnate God of Heaven, stepped out of eternity and took on humanity for no other reason other than to save us by His wondrous, unconditional love.
Jesus experienced everything we experienced to be our perfect substitute—taking our place and bearing the punishment, shame, and guilt that we deserved. Jesus did this for us, and He did this for no other reason than to give us the ability to spend eternity with Him. The love and grace of God gives us the best example on this side of heaven of God's love for us. Jesus is our fountain of life; He is the foundation of our eternal security and the light of the world. And through Him, by God's grace alone, we have eternal life to come to a more abundant life now, as we submit to the guidance of the Holy Spirit who indwells all followers of Christ Jesus.
