Luke 15:20b But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him, and kissed him.
A young child had apparently
misunderstood the term “Broken Home.” His father called him aside and said I do
not care if the basement wall is cracking. Please stop telling everyone you
come from a broken home.” (this “Broken Home” illustration came from Ministry
127).
The father's love in this
biblical account patiently waited on his son to return, and the love he had for
his son never faded. His father's forgiveness was particularly extraordinary
since the son had dishonored the family through his prodigal and wasteful
lifestyle. This wonderful Bible narrative is a beautiful story of a father's
unconditional love who does not hold any animosity against his son, regardless
of the son's actions. The Prodigal son realized his error, repented, and
returned to his father's house. The extent of the son's repentance is matched
only by the volume of His Father's love. The son delivered the speech that he
undoubtedly had rehearsed repeatedly in his mind on his long trek home. His
father, with all likelihood, never heard a word of the repentance account of
the son because forgiveness was not necessary, since the father held no
grievance against his son. How many of you fathers or mothers reading this
today, besides myself, that have an estranged son or daughter and see them
walking up our sidewalk would not run, with open arms and hearts out to meet them. The father in this Bible account clothed his
son with his most acceptable attire, including a ring for his finger, and
called his servants to prepare a feast of grand proportions for his son, that
had come home.
We serve a heavenly Father
that keeps no records of wrongs against us because He sent His Son to give his
earthly life on the "Old Rugged Cross" to atone for all wrongdoing in
our lives. The day will come that we will be walking up the path that leads to
where our Father in Heaven is, and we can rest assured that He will meet us
with open arms. He will clothe us with a glorious and eternal robe of
righteousness and has already prepared an eternal feast for us, fit for His
royal family, of which we are members.
My father exited this life many
years ago and went home to be with our Father in Heaven. I do not remember any
grand luxuries growing up. I do not remember any big lavish houses or fancy
cars. I also do not remember a hungry day and most certainly do not remember a
day that he was not there when I needed him. He taught me the importance of
worship and praise to our Father in Heaven and the importance of prayer. He was
very patient as he taught me to play the guitar and instilling in me a love for
music.
Today let us not forget the
positive and Godly influence our earthly fathers taught us during our
childhood. And let us never forget the love of our heavenly father who left His
glory in heaven and took on human form, to shed His perfect blood that covers
our sin, past, present, and future.
