Exodus 23:13 "Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips.
We do
not have to travel to some faraway distant land to run into false gods of all
descriptions. They can be found all around us right here in the United States.
Whatever we choose to occupy our time when we know we should be giving
ourselves to God’s will for our lives is our god. If there is something that we
might love more than God, something that draws us away from Him, that would be
our idol. There are no boundaries of someone’s material wealth or a lack
thereof to worship other gods. Bowing down to false gods or idols is not
limited to the educated or the uneducated. All categories of people can be
found guilty of this sin (Exodus 23:13 ).
Some might even make a god of themselves, one of their children, or maybe one of their parents. More than just a few people create a god from some special precious gift that has been bestowed upon them by God. This occurs when the giver of all gifts is forgotten, and the heart of that person’s admiration and esteem goes out to the gift itself.
Many
will make a god from a pleasure that has engulfed their minds, spirits, bodies,
and souls. To others, fashion is their god; they spend hours making sure they
wear the most fashionable clothes. These fashion gods will cause some to spend
exorbitant amounts of time fretting over what others might think of their
wardrobe. Don’t be fooled by the scams of Satan that say that you must visit
some faraway heathen lands to find idols and false gods.
There are millions of people out there whose god is money. Dwight Moody used to
say that we have not yet finished worshipping the golden calf. When we begin to
put our faith and trust for our wellbeing in the gold and silver we have
amassed, our riches have become our god, the idol to which we bow down to (Job
31:24-28).
All false gods are not as prevalent as the ones mentioned above. An atheist
will say that he or she does not believe in God, even denying the very
existence of God. However, they will create from their own hands some other god
in place of the one true God (Psalm 115:4-8).
Understanding
and accepting that there is but one true God of heaven and earth is the
beginning of the journey to complete and total obedience and surrender. There
is no alternate truth, such as some might put forward, no pluralism of truth.
There is only one truth, and that is that there is only one God, one Savior of
the world, our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus (2 Samuel 7:22; 1 Kings 8:60;
1 Chronicles 17:20; Isaiah 46:9).
