Romans 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We
do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the
Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the
will of God.
We have known
times that we went to God in prayer and could not find the right words to use.
Times of high stress in our lives. Times when there are tense moments with our
spouse, our kids, our co-workers, and sometimes even between our Christian
brothers and sisters and ourselves. Times when we have just gone to the doctor
and have to wait several weeks for the results to come back on that medical
procedure we have just undergone. When we realize our schedule is so full, we
suddenly understand the adage about too many irons in the fire, and thinking
about it, we cannot get a good night’s sleep.
We have all been there, or we will be there at some point in time. We get down on our knees with full intention to take our burdens to our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, but the right words escape us. We are not sure if we should be praying for guidance, protection, or forgiveness, or all of these. We finally have reached the sweet time that we have a few minutes to ourselves, and then the phone rings, the dogs start barking for no apparent reason, our spouse or one of our kids come rushing in with an earth-shattering issue, the moment is interrupted. How do we pray when we cannot find the right words?
This period of uncertainty is the time to forget about our ordered list that we came to God with and allow the Holy Spirit to lead, guide, and direct us. He recognizes the agony in our hearts and souls, comforts and calms us in our weakness, and is well aware of the spiritual battles we have been fighting. The frustrations of life can cause us to get to the point, as described in Verse 26 (we don’t know what we ought to pray for), but as that verse goes on to tell us, the Holy Spirit will intercede for us. Even though the right words have escaped us, they never will escape Him; because He knows our hearts, He is aware of our deepest thoughts and our greatest needs.
When the time comes that our spirits and souls’ groan with a burden that is weightier than we can bear, we can always put our faith and trust in the knowledge that God will hear our cries through the intervention of the Holy Spirit. Even though the right words may have failed us, our intercessor, the Holy Spirit of God, will never fail us, God will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5; Deuteronomy 31:6).
