Psalm 119:131 I open my
mouth and pant, longing for your commands.
1 Peter 2:2 Like
newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow
up in your salvation.
Anyone who has ever lived on a farm and has had the opportunity to
bottle feed baby animals know the tenacity by which these young goats, horses,
calves and other animals go after the bottle. If one day you take the bottle
to the baby animal and it is not hungry and does not immediately attack the
bottle, you know there is a problem with the animal's health.
The same thing applies to the children of God; if we are not going
after the Word of God, the bread of life, with all the drive and determination
that we did when we first encountered God's Word, then there is a problem with
our spiritual health. What do you do when you lose your hunger for the Word of
God? Some might say that we must continually seek after the Word of God even
when we don't feel the yearning to do so. Feeding on God's word is not a
grit-your-teeth-and-do-your-devotions attitude; it is a hunger, a natural
desire to want to hear the voice of God and to meditate on what the message is
He has for us.
In all saved believers, there is always some appetite in your
heart; however stifled or ignored it may be, for the Word of God. Feed it, set
aside time to read Scripture, or listen to it from an app on your phone. Make a
deliberate effort to be in church and hear the preaching of God's Word. Feed
the appetite you do have, and it will grow.
When the believer in Christ Jesus fails to develop and enrich
their new life in Christ, their spiritual growth will falter. If one chases
after modern-day philosophy there will be only contaminations, the Holy Word of
God carries no impurities. The Bible is clear and uncontaminated. When a
person has been truly born again, there will be an insatiable hunger for the
truth of God’s Word. In this day and age, the world seems to have lost the
desire for daily nourishment of God’s Word. One form of evidence that a person
is truly sold out to Christ is that they will have fallen in love, not only
with the Son of God but the Word of God as well. God’s Holy Word makes us
keenly aware of our sins and exposes the true motives of our hearts. The Bible
will keep us astutely conscious and attentive to the very presence of God.
