Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution nor famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake, we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” (Psalm 44:22) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul is telling us that
there is nothing on either side of the grave that can separate us from the Love
of Christ, it could be said that there is nothing that can separate us from our
salvation, that was made possible through the Love of Christ Jesus. The Apostle
Paul mentions every possible trial that we might find ourselves in. A large
percentage of the anxiety and fear that grips a person in this life is the thought
that one day they will have to face death. Even death does not have the power
to separate us from the love of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.
These trials that we go
through serve to bring us closer to Christ and make us more dependent on Him.
Paul quotes Psalm 44:22 in the 36th verse of Romans 8 to remind all
the followers of Christ Jesus that we will always face trials and tribulation
in this life. The reason being is that we live in a fallen world, that is at
enmity against God. Sin, disease, chaos, decay, and death was ushered in at the
fall in the Garden. And because of the fall, this world experiences disharmony
as it's influenced by the one the Apostle Paul calls, "the god of this
age," who is Satan (2 Corinthians 4:4) and who John calls “the prince of
this world” (John 14:30). Therefore, we endure spiritual warfare, which is
waged around us, along with the consequences of the fallen world we live
in.
And because of these
things, we will face trials and loss as followers of Christ. However, we are
assured that our salvation is secure in the love of our Lord and Savior, Christ
Jesus, and when death comes upon us and we are at home with Jesus, we will know
more, feel more and possess more joy than we can imagine here in this dark
world (Philippians 1:21). Some that are skeptical might ask, “well how can you
be so sure about this?” We can give a confident answer because it depends not
on us, but on Jesus.
He has promised us, He
will never leave us, nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:8 ; 31:6; Joshua 1:5; 1
Kings 8:57; 1 Chronicles 28:20; Psalm 37:28 ; 94:14; Isaiah 41:17; 42:16;
Hebrews 13:5). He has promised us that He will not lose any the Father has
placed in His hands (John 10:28). These promises from God mean we
can rest in the security of our adoption to the Family of God and the
faithfulness of our Lord to carry us through all trials until we go home to be
with Him.
