Psalm 119: 165 Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.
Psalm 119 being the longest psalm, as well as the longest chapter in the
Bible, there is a massive number of messages from God to be gleaned from this
Psalm.
Throughout the history of the world, many governmental bodies and rulers have
used scare tactics to attempt to keep people away from God’s Holy Word. Even
here in the United States, laws and ordinances have passed to disallow the
display of the Ten Commandments, nativity scenes, and other Christian symbols
on government property. The same thing
happened at the writing of this Psalm. First, we see in verse 161, “Rulers
persecute me without cause, but my heart trembles at your word.” Then, in
verses 162-164, The writer rejoices in the great promises of God’s Word, loves
God’s Law, and praises Him several times a day.
It seems that the whole world seeks a sense of peace in life, which is somewhat
difficult to find in worldly matters. There is a peace that will envelop your
entire being that comes from the love of God's Holy Word. We must note that it
does not say here that a great peace will come to those who keep God's Law
because none can do that. It says those that love God's Law will discover the
peace that nothing in this world can bring. In God's Word, this peace will come
to those that have found His great mercy and grace.
The Word is how God speaks to people and we should love it and use it
every day of our lives. Think about our giving gifts to those that we love. The
giving of a gift, at its core, is simply an act of grace. It is someone giving
you a gift not because you deserve it, but because your friend wanted to show
their love and caring. The free gift of salvation is given by God, not because
we have done anything to deserve it, because we certainly have not, but because
He loves us. He loved us before we loved Him (1 John 4:19).
God’s Word is compared to honey, as indicated in verse 103 in this Psalm; there is nothing sweeter in love than to be immersed in the Word of God. In verse 105 of this same Psalm, God’s Word is compared to a lamp that guides our way. In other places in the Bible, God’s Word is compared to a sword that defends against spiritual enemies (Ephesians 6:17) The Word is also compared to milk that nourishes the spirit and soul (1 Peter 2:2).
If we truly love our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, we will not only read the Word, but we will love the Word and make it the roadmap by which we navigate in this life. If we adhere to this pattern, nothing Satan throws at us will make us stumble. If we truly love our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, we will not only read the Word, but we will love the Word and make it the roadmap by which we navigate in this life. If we adhere to this pattern, nothing Satan throws at us will make us stumble.
Thomas Horn (October 20, 1780-January 27, 1862)
once wrote: “Amidst the storms and tempests of the world, there is a perfect
calm in the breasts of those, who not only do the will of God but ‘love’ to do
it.”
