Matthew 12:30 and Luke 11:23 Whoever is not with me is against me. And whoever does not gather with me scatters.
These words were spoken by our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. He was speaking to all people of the world when he was on earth as well as all this day and age, into the end of time as we know it in this life. Jesus was then sending out a personal invitation for all people to come to a distinct conclusion on his claim of his Messiahship. Jesus is letting us know that there is no middle ground or choices either. We are with him, or we are against him; Christianity is not a spectator sport. There are no sidelines or bleachers by which we can sit back and enjoy the game.
Jesus has made the line very clear, dividing the people who
embrace him and those who reject him. There are also only two team captains,
and we must choose one side or the other; either we serve Christ Jesus or serve
the captain of the opposing team, Satan.
Gathering together is the objective; the question is, what is it
that our Lord and Savior wants us to gather with him? The answer to that
question is pointed very clearly out in many places in the Bible. The clearest
example is the last word he spoke as he ascended back to his glory in heaven
(Acts 1:8). Jesus told his perspective Apostles to follow him, making them
Fishers of people (Matthew 4:19). This directive was not given only to the 12
that followed him for the three and a half years he spent on the Earth. This
directive is for all that have accepted Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
If the call to fish for or gather people were only for the first 12 followers
of Christ Jesus, the growth of followers and believers would have come to an
end when the 12 were all gone.
These two verses are about the importance of 2 things. First,
living our lives in a manner that we might reflect the light of the world,
Christ Jesus, to this lost, dark, and dying globe. Secondly, we are to
introduce a person to Christ Jesus when the occasion arises. This witnessing
opportunity means a consistent program of prayer and bible study, and taking
advantage of every opportunity we have to study the word of God.
Among these includes our time of study and in concert with God’s
people in meeting together to learn more about Christ Jesus, learning how we
can become better gatherers.
