Psalm 16:1-2 Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing."
To live with a peace of mind that goes beyond any human perception, which we will never find in worldly pursuits, God must be at the center of all that we contemplate or accomplish. A.W. Tozer once said, As God is exalted to the right place in our lives, a thousand problems are solved all at once. No faithful follower and believer in Christ Jesus would ever say that God is not first in their lives, but there are many whose lives are saying just that (Matthew 15:8; Revelation 2:4). To take refuge in God, we must realize accept and practice that all we do or say is about Him; everything we are involved in must reflect on Him.
Situations and conditions in our lives are in constant flux, changing and shifting from one aspect to another. Many people in our lives come and go, but God is always a constant and can keep us safe in the core of any changes in our daily walk. In 1 Corinthians, Paul writes that whatever we eat, drink, or do, we do for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). This verse from Paul does not say do some things for the Glory of God; He admonishes us to do all things for God's glory. If we decide to choose something else to put first in our lives, in replacement of God and His kingdom, it will not matter what we choose as an alternative.
In this Psalm, David is saying that he takes refuge in God. A sanctuary is a place of security, where we feel safe and protected from whatever danger arises. In the center of God's will for our lives is the safest place and the most excellent refuge we shall ever know.
David is also saying that anything apart from God, such as worldly treasures and pleasures, comes to nothing. So when David is bidding God keep him safe, it could mean asking God to preserve him from the world with all of its thrills and delights, which is where we are when we are living a life that is Christ-centered instead of worldly-centered. God is our refuge against all the flatteries and the frowns of the world that may come our way. All the world has to offer us, no matter how shiny or glittery it may appear, is an allusion from Satan and will all come to nothing. We receive any good thing in this life because of the great love, grace, and mercy of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. We possess any unique talent because of God, about God, and meant for God and His honor and His glory.
