1 Peter 1:3-5 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope, through the resurrection of Christ Jesus, from death. Peter is calling on his readers, both then and now, to praise God for the living hope given us as believers and followers of Christ Jesus. This everlasting hope has its solid foundation in the resurrection of Christ Jesus. Because He lives, we shall live. Our new birth gave us this eternal life. Consequently, our hope is both alive within us and part of our new life in Christ.
Peter, in this writing, when reflecting on our salvation from God, could see no other response except praise. God deserves all the glory because this is made possible because of His great love and mercy; there is nothing we can do to obtain eternal life. Without the mercy of God, we would have no hope. We all are, by nature, evil sinners, convicted by God's justice, shunned from His presence by His holiness, crushed by His commanding power. Furthermore, while the Truth of His Holy Word shows our blatant disregard for His law, His wrath fulfills the punishment we most certainly deserve.
When the Children of Israel were forty years in the wilderness, they anticipated the Promised Land's inheritance. As born-again saved believers, we should also expect our inheritance, which is the other side of the grave. Although the Promised Land of the Israelites did suffer destruction, our inheritance will never perish, spoil, or fade. No power, outside of the power of God, can destroy, contaminate, or corrupt our inheritance, and it will not wear out or waste away. Our inheritance is Christ Jesus Himself and the blessings He has promised us (1 John 3:2; Colossians 3:4; Ephesians 1:14; Romans 8:11; Romans 8:18-23).
Not only is the inheritance promised to us protected by the Power of God, but also our entire being is under the umbrella of His safeguard. All Christians will undoubtedly obtain an eternal inheritance one day (Philippians 1:6; 1 Corinthians 1:8). Peter was not advocating that our faith keeps us saved; faith is the process by which we receive salvation. It is the power of God that retains our redemption.
The salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time is the phase of salvation that we have yet to enjoy, which will be our glorification (Romans 8:30; Philippians 3:21; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). When this occurs, God will not only save us from sin but also save us from the presence of sin. This glorification will come at our physical death, or the Rapture, whichever event comes first.
