Colossians 1:13-14 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
The Greek word for “rescued” used by Paul here in this writing is “rhuomai” (rhoo-om-ahee) (Strong’s 4506), which means to rescue or deliver from some form of danger. As believers and followers of Christ Jesus, He has rescued us from the threat of Satan’s kingdom of Darkness by placing our faith and trust in the finished work of Jesus at the Cross of Calvary (Ephesians 6:12). Jesus also referred to this Darkness in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 25:30). The Apostle Peter also referred to our rescue from Satan’s kingdom of Darkness and brought into the “light of Christ Jesus” (1 Peter 2:9).
This Darkness referred to here is much more than just an absence of light; it is the complete and total reversal and the opposite of light. This Darkness is not only being without God but being against God. We are delivered and rescued from a rebellion of God. This delivery or rescue is not progressing in motion; it took place at our conversion. As Jesus said from the Cross, “it is finished,” it is greater than the rescue of the Children of Israel from Egypt. The idea behind this is that we have been rescued and delivered from Satan’s Darkness and brought into the Light of Christ Jesus permanently (John 10:28).
This gospel truth is a comforting thought as we begin each new day in our walk with Christ Jesus that nothing or no power can dislodge us from the love of God through Christ Jesus, our Lord, and Savior. However, we must always remember we are not citizens of this world but foreigners and temporary residents (1 Peter 2:11; Ephesians 2:19; Philippians 3:20).
Charles Spurgeon said: “Beloved, we still are tempted by Satan, but we are not under his power; we have to fight with him, but we are not his slaves. He is not our king; he has no rights over us; we do not obey him; we will not listen to his temptations.”
Satan and all of his evil demons do not have the power to remove us from the light and love of Christ Jesus, the kingdom of God. The only thing that Satan can do is to fool and trick us into believing that we are still part of his kingdom. Sometimes we are carried back, in our minds and thoughts by Satan, to a time in our past that we perceive better times. During these times, it is not difficult for our eyes to wander away from Christ Jesus.
Suppose we continue to “walk in the
spirit,” keep Christ Jesus as the hub of our life’s wheel and not just a spoke
that comes around now and then. In that case, we will be able to be victorious
over the battles, we fight every day with Satan—remembering the “Sword of the Spirit,”
which is the Word of God.
Satan will try to fill your days with so
much worldly activity that you cannot find the time to engage with “the sword
of the Spirit.” Keep in your mind that everything Satan dangles in front of you
is an allusion, not real, and is all temporary. Take time every day to spend
time with God in prayer and Bible study so that you will have the ammunition
needed for the daily battles we will fight against Satan.
