Matthew 5:13-16 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Christians
have a responsibility, in Christ Jesus, to the world; no child of God can live
in isolation from the world. No follower of Christ can live in estrangement to
the world. We are not of the world, but we are in it. The function of a “salty
Christian” is to influence others. Sadly, too many Christians and churches have
become less appealing to the non-Christian world. God intends us as Christians
to affect the world. Christians cannot live in seclusion, sheltered from the
world. God means for us to reach out to the lost of this world and witness the
Gospel of Christ Jesus.
The
intake of salt will make one thirsty. As followers of Christ, we should live
our lives to create a spiritual thirst in those we meet in our daily walk. Our
purpose is not to thrust our beliefs on others but be more aware of how we live
our lives. Our spiritual thirst will help us be more intimate with our Lord and
Savior Christ Jesus and be thankful for His grace, mercy, and love. This thirst
will make us more aware and more appreciative of the sacrifice of Christ Jesus
on the Cross of Calvary. Our spiritual thirst will also give us a greater
desire to spend more time in God’s Holy Word. Once we are immersed in the Word
of God there will be a change in our lives, which will create a thirst in those
in our everyday walk. The beauty of this lies in that it will afford us the
chance to introduce others to the only way to eternal life, Christ Jesus.
The salt in this verse of scripture represents the character or the earthly life of Christ Jesus. We, as Christians, are representatives of Christ; how we reflect His light is an indication of our saltiness. Losing our saltiness does in no way mean a loss of our salvation, that is eternally secure. Instead, losing our saltiness represents slipping from God’s will for our lives, which all of us have experienced from time to time. Praise God that we serve a loving and forgiving Lord and Savior who will always be there with open arms to welcome us back into the fold.
