Psalm 139:1-4 You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.
The knowledge that we gain from this verse of Scripture is, on the one hand, very challenging and, on the other, at the same time, very emancipating and energizing. It is trying to know that God is everywhere at all times and knows everything we do or even think about. However, it is very comforting and encouraging to know that the most powerful being in the universe is always there to deal with issues that no one in the world can see or realize.
To the world the fact that God is all-knowing (Omniscient) and
that He is everywhere at all times (Omnipresent) is foolishness. God is
believed by those outside Christ Jesus to be a myth and falsehood. However, the
Godly truth is that God does watch and care for every step we take. He knows
when we are traveling on the straight and narrow path that leads back to Him,
and He knows when we vary off that path and sit, stand and walk in the world's
ways (Psalm 1:1). The fact that God knows all actions and every thought that
comes into our heads should profoundly affect our speech and
actions.
This gospel truth is not limited to the fact that God knows
everything but that He knows each of us personally. In the same manner, He is
not just everywhere at all times; He is everywhere with each one of His
children. So likewise, it is not that God just created all things, but that He
created all of us. Every one of us was molded and fashioned by almighty God. We
were all made differently, given different gifts and talents, in a manner that
is far beyond and above any human conception or understanding.
All of God’s children will give an account of our earthy lives
at the Judgment Seat of Christ (Romans 14:10-12; 2 Corinthians 5:10).
Everything concerning our earthly lives will be exposed; we can hide nothing
from God. It is feasible to conceal our sins from ourselves or others
intuitively. We need something larger than ourselves, unbiased to scrutinize
our souls. We need to confront and accept the magnitude of God’s judgment. We
are visible to Him. God’s manner for doing this is His Holy Word. That is the
reason we should call on God to search us by His Word (Hebrews 4:13). In this
world where we will encounter the evil of Satan and his followers, this verse
of Scripture from Psalms 139 will stand forever as an assurance that God knows
us, and still, He loves us.
