Exodus 16:16-18 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer for each person you have in your tent. The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.
The
suggested daily quantity for each person was an omer (approximately two
quarts). In much the same manner, church leaders frequently recommend a
particular amount of daily Bible study as a parameter. This standard functions
as a stimulus to help one study the Word of God, which is something that every
child of God needs every day.
The
Bible tells us that the Children of Israel who collected a small amount did not
want more. Furthermore, the Bible teaches that the Israelites that gathered
much did not have any wasted. In much the same manner, there will be days that
are just reading a few verses from the Bible that will be sufficient to sustain
us for that day. What we read could be the exact issue that had been on our
minds that day. On the other side, a concentrated and rigorous four-hour bible
study session will not leave us with the idea that we gathered too much that
day. Furthermore, an extended daily Bible Study will not eliminate the need for
Bible study tomorrow.
Some
say that too much Bible study will render one “too heavenly to be worldly
good”; however, there is no way that we can overfeed on God’s Word. The
Children of Israel did not hoard their manna over days because it would produce
worms (Exodus 16:19-20). Instead, God assured us that the Israelites went out
to collect manna each day to remind us today of the importance of daily Bible
Study.
A
vigorous, energetic feeding of the Word of God on Sunday morning, for instance,
is merely not sufficient to maintain us for the week ahead. We must gather our
manna (God’s Word) each day of our lives.
We
all should be answering this day, and every day is: Have we had our manna
today?
