1 Corinthians 15:48-49 As was the earthly man, so are those who are
of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.
And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the
image of the heavenly man
We are all offspring of our first parents, Adam, and Eve. God formed Adam from the dust, and back to the dust, our physical bodies will go when we have finished with them in this life. Natural inclinations and tendencies will rule a person's every step as long as they are in a natural, unregenerate state. Our actions continually and persistently reflect the uncertainties and fleshliness that Adam and Eve set free in the Garden when they chose to partake from the fruit of the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told them that if they did eat of the fruit of that tree they would die. From that day forward we are all born dead in our sins.
At our first birth, we bear the image of our first parents; an image puts forth an impression or indication, a model. As unsaved people, there is more than just a superficial resemblance to Adam and Eve; there reflects their sinful nature. However, at our rebirth, we exhibit the image of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. The resurrection of Christ Jesus is a model of our resurrection. The grave could not keep Jesus, and it will not keep us. This statement is why Jesus asked the question: "..whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:26). God saw our plight when the first sin was committed and promised to send a Savior to justify our sins. The power of the resurrection of Christ Jesus released the bonds and chains that our first parents put upon us. We have the opportunity for a new life, one that God has intended for us in creating the world.
All humans bear the image of the first Adam, and one day those that have
placed their faith and trust in the second Adam will take His image (1
Corinthians 15:45). We come from the dust as did the first Adam, but we will be
made heavenly from the second Adam (1 Corinthians 15:49 b). As Christians, as
we bear the image of Christ Jesus, we should pattern our lives after Him, we
will never be able to be like Him in this life, but for that we should strive.
We shall see the day that we will be like Jesus, that is, without sin, but for
the present, we should be in the process of conforming to His image (Romans
8:28-30; 2 Corinthians 3:18).
