Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
This verse of scripture affords all a clear path towards occupational gratification and fulfillment. Whatever we do for our earthly masters or employers, we should do it with all of our hearts, just as if we were doing it for the Lord. It is not vital what job or vocation we do because God has called us to whatever career we choose. This scripture is not teaching us to ignore those instructions for whom we work. It is saying that it is easy to subtly fall into the trap of Satan when we find our sense of worth from the ways of the world. Sometimes people will begin to see themselves as superior to others because of the status of their earthly jobs or the amount of money they earn. Our inheritance in our heavenly home is based not on whether we were a doctor, a lawyer or a tradesperson, or factory worker, or how much gold and silver we had amassed.
The treasures we should be focusing on are the treasures laid up in heaven (Matthew 6:19-21), not the material wealth we gain here in this world (Matthew 16:26). Our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus is the one that judges all that we do; consequently, all of our deeds and actions are actually for God. Therefore, anything we do is not simply for earthly goals but to bring honor and glory to Christ Jesus.
The primary focus of the world is on getting ahead, amassing as much gold and silver as possible to have the finer things in life. While there is nothing wrong with having “the finer things in life” or amassing large amounts of gold and silver, in itself, it is when that becomes our only focus in life. The love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself. (1 Timothy 6:10). As Christian, followers, and believers in Christ Jesus, we should show the world who we are working for, Christ Jesus and His honor and glory, not to gain recognition for ourselves. When we do all that, we do it as if we are working for the Lord, our entire outlook changes. We may feel like our efforts here in this life are going unnoticed by people, but our rewards in heaven are beyond human comprehension. Turn your focus away from the ways of the world, keep your eyes on Jesus, and you will discover new and more exciting passions that previously have been beyond your ability to comprehend.
