Bible Verse of the Day Friday October 15th 2021

John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."

In this verse of Scripture, Jesus is speaking to a Samaritan woman at the well while he awaited his disciples to return with food. During this encounter, Jesus revealed to her that He was the long-awaited promised Messiah (John 4:25-26). Jesus was speaking to her concerning the true worship of God. She told Jesus that the Samaritans worshiped on the mountain, but she knew the Jews worshiped in Jerusalem. Jesus let her know, and in the process, let everyone down through the ages know that worship of God was not about a place, a style, or tradition of humanity.

The words that Jesus spoke to the woman at the well that day was the Word of God, plain and simple, telling the world about true worship of God. First of all, what it is not about is any specific style. Some believe that worship should occur in a quiet, controlled environment on one end of the spectrum. In contrast, others seem to think that it should be loud and boisterous. Then some believe that the leaders in the worship service, the pastor, and the worship team members, should all be adorned in some form of robes. The music in worship is in debate as well. The old traditional worship hymns in some Christian circles are to be the only proper form of praise. While some use more modern forms of music, the spectrum there is vast and ranging.

Jesus said that the only true worship was worship done in spirit and truth. This true worship has absolutely nothing to do with style, adornment of clothing, or genre of music. To worship in spirit means that our hearts must be in tune, in harmonization and synchronization with the Holy Spirit of God. Consequently, we must completely surrender our entire beings, bodies, souls, spirits, and minds to our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. To worship in truth means that we are appropriately and accurately abreast and enlightened to the validity of the Word of God. To have a genuine heart of worship, we must understand and appreciate the only true God we are worshiping.

Either one or the other, spirit or truth, standing on its own will lead to a frivolous, excessively emotional experience, as some in the world classify it, a form of high. This false worship most often occurs when the worship is with spirit without truth, and when the high of emotionalism concludes, the worship itself concludes. While on the other hand, truth without spirit leads to a form of legalism that becomes parched and dispassionate. The combination of spirit and truth can only occur if there is jubilant and elated gratefulness for the absolute truth of God’s Word. The more informed we are in God’s Word, the greater our admiration for what Christ Jesus did on the Cross of Calvary will become. This true worship will lead to a much greater desire to give honor and glory to God. Worship is all about God.
