2 Peter 1:3-4 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
There is a staggering and astounding prospect that all Christians, believers, and followers in and of Christ Jesus are blessed with. When the world and its carnal ways seem to hang around and lure us into a fleshly snare of lascivious and wanton self-serving desires, we have everything needed in order to live a surrendered life to Christ and others. When our situations cause uncertainties and self-doubt accompanied by a lack of confidence, God has made a way that we can escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). These things come our way through and by the most authoritative and formidable force in the eternal chronicles of the universe, God’s divine power. It was God’s divine power that brought the world we live in into existence, that carved out the mountains and valleys, dug the deepest of the oceans, and filled them with aquatic life.
It was God’s divine power that breathed life into the first human that He created from the dust of the ground (Ecclesiastes 3:20).
This verse promises us that through the power of God, we have everything we need to live a Godly life through our knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. The Greek word for knowledge is epignosis, which means knowledge gained through the first-hand relationship in its cognitive structure. The first-hand relationship with God can only be gained through our faith and trust in Christ Jesus, as our personal Lord and Savior, which will lead to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God, which will illuminate scriptures so that we might see the message that God has for us (1 Corinthians 2:14-16). This comes through a Christ-Centered life of immense bible study, prayer and service, and surrender to Christ Jesus, along with a cooperative relationship with Christ Jesus in spreading the good news of His gospel to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).
Through these great and wonderful promises, we will be able to participate in the divine nature of God. To be a participant in God’s divine nature does not mean that we are on the same level as God, we will never reach or even understand or comprehend the level that God exists on. To become a partaker in God’s divine nature means that we take on some of the characteristics of the nature of God. These are, to only name a few, goodness, gentleness, righteousness, mercifulness, forgiveness, patience, joyfulness, self-control, faithfulness, kindness, honesty, and God’s lists of His nature goes on forever. The idea here is that we have none of these characteristics in our human nature, and even if we could somehow get close to one or two of them, they would be corrupted and defiled by sin.
We can never do this on our own; only God can achieve such an amazing accomplishment in us, who are disposed with the propensity to sin. This is such an amazing and marvelous miracle performed by our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus that we should never fail to praise and honor God with the surrender of our lives, time, talent, and treasure, into His service (Psalm 145:1-16; Psalm 34:1-18).
