Genesis 3:12-13 The man said, "The woman you put here with me —she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
A Father goes into a bedroom when he hears loud screaming from his two sons, John, ten years old, and Mike, 8. He finds a plastic baseball bat on the floor and Mike crying. He asked John what happened to which he was told: “Mike hit his head on the bat.” The father asked John, “where was the bat when Mike hit his head on it?” To which Mike replied, “it was in my hands.” We learn the blame game at a very early age. It is not something new; it has been around since the beginning of time, as we see in our text this morning. Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the snake for direct disobedience to God’s instruction that both of them were aware of.
Today we blame our actions on how our parents raised us. A young man told me not too long ago that he was an atheist because that was the way he was raised. Everything from how we sit at the dinner table to our spiritual downfalls can be blamed on our parents. The best years of our life begin when we decide our problems are our own. We do not blame them on our parents, the ecosystem, or the government. Instead, we realize that God’s Word is the standard by which we should live our life and direct our children.
God did not build a security fence around the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil or place guards there to keep Adam and Eve from partaking of the fruit of that tree. Instead, he told them not to eat that fruit, and if they did, they would surely die. Nevertheless, God still gives us instructions and warnings of what will pass if we disregard them. We find these in His Holy Word, and just like our first ancestors in the Garden of Eden, we are all aware of the guidelines and the consequences.
The Bible is the most accessible book known to humankind. There is one in the nightstand in every motel room we stay in. Ask any Christian for a copy, and it will be yours. The internet is full of free copies of the Bible in any language on the planet. Look in the back of any Church pew, there will be a Bible.
There has only been one perfect person that ever put their feet down on God’s green earth, our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus, God in the flesh. The rest of us are imperfect beings, and this includes your parents and my parents. We will all make mistakes in raising our children, but we cannot dwell on those oversights that occurred when we grew up. There comes a time in our lives that we must stop looking back for excuses for our sinful lives and accept God’s word as our guiding light (Psalms 119:105).
