Psalm 106:24-25 Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe his promise. They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the LORD.
We all complain about something or someone at times; however,
Satan blinds us as to what complaining is all about. As a result, we sometimes
complain about the sins of those around us while accepting our grumbling as we
are just having a bad day. God gives us a stern warning about complaining and
lets us know that it is a sin. The best example of this is the Children of
Israel; God led them out of bondage, provided food and water, and led them to
the long-promised land filled with milk and honey. Their journey should have
been an eleven-day trip but turned into a forty-year walkabout in the
wilderness.
We can discover why God set them adrift for so many years in the
scriptures like our text today, Psalms 106:24-25. Three sins kept the
Israelites wandering in the desert for forty years and never saw the Promised
Land.
The first of these sins is “they despised the pleasant land;” God
was leading them to a beautiful land where they would be a great nation and
wanted to go back to Egypt. Have we ever complained about our living
conditions? Do we see what we have in life as a blessing from God or want more?
The second of these sins that kept them wandering until they died was that
“they did not believe his promise.” When we complain, we say that we do not
believe His promise that He will supply our every need. The third of these sins
is from verse “25-They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the LORD.”
This grumbling cost the Children of Israel their part in the
Promised Land; Our complaining will come with a cost. God may very well be
leading us to a “Promised Land” here in this life but because of our murmuring,
keep us adrift and apart from the blessing He has in store for us. No matter
what causes discontent in our lives, complaining has always been and will
always be unbelief towards God’s Promise that He will supply our every need.
Dissatisfaction will occur when we take our eyes off what we have and focus on
what we want.
There will always be tribulation in our lives; our choices are to spend our time complaining, taking our eyes off our Lord and Savior, or remembering all the blessings God has bestowed on us. If we choose to focus on the blessings, not only will we live a more victorious life, but we will be a clear witness and positive Christian example to the world around us (Ephesians 4:29)
If Satan has you in his trap of grumbling, ask God to give you the strength to overcome this temptation. Why would we settle for what we think we want, when God who knows all our needs, is ready to bless us with His very best?
