Romans 6:11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
There is a world of distinction that separates our condition from our position. The substitutionary work that Christ Jesus did on the Cross of Calvary on our behalf is never changing. The status we have with God is eternal; however, the state of our everyday Christian life is in constant flux. Christ Jesus won the victory over death, Satan, and sin when He stepped out of the tomb that glorious morning. This greatest of all miracles allows us to claim the same victory in that we are alive in Christ Jesus. We have the freedom to live a life that would be pleasing in the sight of God because of what our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus did for us on the Cross.
Without faith in Christ Jesus and what He did for us, we can never live a spiritual life surrendered to God. The spiritual life that we desire does not rest on any works we might stumble through but the work of Christ Jesus on our behalf. Our life of faith is in our justification as well as our sanctification. This verse is not telling us that we must die to sin because that has already been done for us when Christ Jesus died on the Cross of Calvary. Since our Lord and Savior died in our place, took our position on the Cross, God views us as being in Christ Jesus. That being the case, death does not have any power over us; the grave holds no sting. Our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus has satisfied every claim of sin that is against us.
Symbolically speaking, all people that have placed their faith and trust in Christ Jesus for their salvation have already died to sin, were buried and resurrected to a new life in Christ Jesus. We, as born again, washed in the blood of Jesus, save followers and believers in Christ Jesus, are on the same corridor as Jesus. In God's sight, we are so intimately associated with Christ Jesus that God bestows the credit of the righteousness of Christ upon us and accepts the payment of His death for our sins. In being dead to sin, our old person is dead and buried and the bonds and chains of the slavery of sin have been broken and hold us no more. Even though we have not lost our desire to sin (1 John 1:9-10), Satan can't force us to sin (1 Corinthians 10:13). Consequently, we must constantly remind ourselves that we are dead to sin (Romans 6:12-18).
God's Holy Word tells us that our life in Christ Jesus is so rich and rewarding that our new life will deaden our desire for sin. Consequently, it is not so much as saying no to sin as saying yes to Christ Jesus. A life centered in God will produce in us a strength that we can never muster on our own. Therefore, in and through Christ Jesus is the only avenue that we can take to defeat the sin patterns in our daily walk.
