Titus 3:9-11 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.
This Verse was a warning from Paul to Jewish Christians not to get bogged down in controversies over the Law. For today’s Christian, most false doctrine stems from someone attempting to add some part of the Law to grace. A good example is those that say there is some work or deed that one must do in connection with God’s grace to assure salvation. But, as students of God’s Word, we know the truth, and it is that salvation is by grace through faith, plus nothing (Ephesians 2:8-9).
There is nothing that we have or can do that God’s needs, works salvation is false teaching and a way for Satan to get a foothold in someone’s life. We could go on for many pages listing different false doctrines, but anything that is not in line with the truth of God’s Word is from Satan and his false teachings. It is counter-productive for children of God, followers, and believers in Christ Jesus to get involved in disputes over teachings opposed to the truth of the Gospel. There will be those that come to us with ideas and beliefs that we know to be not in line with God’s Holy Word. If we are not sure if what we are hearing is the truth are not, seek the truth through the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit. He will lead you to the truth (Matthew 7:7; Luke 11:9).
If someone comes to us with teachings that are not of God, not in line with the truth of His Holy Word, this Verse of scripture advice is the best avenue to follow. When we try to show them the truth from the Bible, we should do it in a respectful, humble, and courteous manner (1 Peter 3:15). More importantly, we should not give up just because they rejected the truth of God’s Word the first time we approached them. However, according to the advice that Paul sent in his letter to Titus, after the second time that this acrimonious person rejects the truth of the Word of God, we should turn away from this person, “have nothing to do with them.”
The Verse of the day for today does not say that we should not pray for them because we should not forget them, God certainly has not, and we should remember them in our prayers. Instead, we should never forget the two greatest commandments, love God with all your heart, mind, body, and soul and love others the same (Matthew 22:36-40). The Bible is not open for debate, it is the unadulterated, unmodified everlasting truth, and we should not feel the need to debate or defend it. Our job is the spread the truth of the Word of God to the lost of this world. While living our lives in a manner that we would be a good reflector for the light of Christ Jesus to illuminate the path to all that seek to follow Him.
