John 3:20-21 Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John 3 is centered around the new birth, as Jesus explained it to the Pharisees, Nicodemus, who did not understand what Jesus was speaking about. There are still many today that fail to understand what the concept of the new birth is all about. This day, there is a movement among some Christians that we should not use the term "Born Again" because of the misunderstanding surrounding that requirement for entering the Kingdom of heaven because it offends some people.
In the 1960s, the State of Virginia passed a law that would require a certain amount of "Foot Candles" of light in the bars and saloons. Unfortunately, the saloon owners had light levels in the bars so low that it became a danger to the people in the bars. This illustration is a prime example of how sin likes darkness instead of light.
The light Jesus is talking about here is symbolic, Him being the "Light of the World," and those that want nothing to do with Him remaining away from that light and in the darkness of sin. People who consistently reject Jesus see themselves as people who have moved away from superstition and have learned to deal with all the world's problems independently. To say that they would need someone else to support them in their everyday problems would indicate weakness, and their pride won't let them do that. It boils down to pride or humility, and some see humility as a weakness; however, humility is power harnessed by the Holy Spirit. The horse is a powerful beast and uncontrolled he will go in all directions except where he is supposed to go. However, you can keep the animal under control with a tiny bit in his mouth. So likewise, humility has great power only when it is under the control of the Holy Spirit.
Those that fight against Christ Jesus do so because they love their sin but don't see it as sin. They also do not want to accept the fact that there is a God, and He will judge their sins. When we talk about the love of evil that will separate one from God for eternity in an awful place called hell, we think of the big sins, but the sin of trying to be the Lord of one's own life is enough to send one to hell.
Non-Christians have a consigned pursuit in rejecting the light of Christ Jesus, and when this happens, they fall deep into spiritual obstinacy. Satan fools those that reject the light of Christ into believing that the worthless worldly value they adhere to has some value.
When Moses went to free the Children of Israel from Egyptian slavery, God sent plagues on the land to convince Pharaoh to let his people go. One of them was total darkness; it would be like today losing all electrical power at night (Exodus 10:22-23). In Egypt, somewhat like today, if we were to lose all light, all traditional human association and fellowship would be considerably curtailed. It would only be resumed when God restored the light. When people walk in the light of Christ, they have fellowship with Him and others; His light is what fills the body of Christ, the church.
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
