Romans 12:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
If we were to be utterly
truthful with others and ourselves, we would admit that we sin because we like
it. If someone hates eating liver, there will be no temptation to eat it. Much
the same way, we will only fight against sin when we hate the sin. Someone
might ask: how do we learn to hate sin and evil? This verse of Scripture from
Paul’s letter to the Romans teaches us how to do that.
Our love for our Lord and
Savior, Christ Jesus, and our love for other people must come from our hearts;
it must be sincere. This genuine, passionate, agape love is void of hypocrisy
and deception, with no pretense. Christian Love should have no deceit or
self-interest or some ulterior motive that will advance or promote ourselves (2
Corinthians 6:6; 1 Peter 1:22). True Christian Love requires that we give
ourselves to God and others with a genuine and sincere heart.
It is not enough that we
attempt to shun evil; we must go further and hate what Satan spews out of his
lies and deceits. The world around us tells us that we must be politically
correct, going along with whatever the world sees as proper and appropriate.
This incorporation would be considered evil and obliging to sin, which would
not be a good concept. When we allow evil and sin to have a place in our lives
not to offend someone, it can significantly hamper our walk and personal
relationship with Christ Jesus (Psalm 97:10).
If true Christian love is
alive in someone’s heart, evil and sin will not be tolerated but looked upon as
detrimental to all those who take part in it. There are some aspects in the
life of a Christian where hate is goodness or righteousness. According to His
Holy Word, there are many things even God himself hates (Proverbs 6:16-19;
Isaiah 1:12-15; Amos 5:21). We can love the sinner while at the same time
hating the sin. Even though God hates the sins, He loves all sinners, of which
we all are.
A love that fails to distinguish between good
and evil is pure emotionalism and eons apart from true Christian love. True
Christian Love hates evil, and it does not tolerate or endure sin. With a true
uncompromising heart, one who loves God and others will not consent or comply
with the eccentricities, characteristics, or peculiar beliefs others hold. On
the contrary, we as Christians, faithful followers, and believers in Christ
Jesus, should give the lost of the world what they need, which is the truth of
God’s Holy Word—keeping in our minds that truth and grace are two halves of the
same walnut shell, two sides of the same coin. When we bring the truth of God’s
Holy Word to the lost of this world, we must always offer it with the same love
and grace that God offers us.
