Acts 1:4-5 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
As
followers and believers of Christ Jesus, we do not receive the indwelling of
the Holy Spirit through any merits of our own; it is a gift through the Grace
of God. Being baptized of the Holy Spirit takes place the very heartbeat we
accept Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior (1 Corinthians 12:13; Titus 3:5). It
was never God's intention for the gift of the Holy Spirit to be reserved for a
few super-spiritual believers. There is no directive in God's Word for the
believer to experience a baptism of the Holy Spirit; God does it at the point
of Salvation.
In 1
Corinthians 12:13, we read that "we were all baptized" by one Spirit
to form one Body in Christ Jesus. To put it another way, the indwelling of the
Holy Spirit is the link pin that joins all Children of God into one Body. The
Baptism of the Holy Spirit accomplishes two things. First, it unifies and binds
us as a part of the Body of Christ, and secondly, it portrays our
co-crucifixion with Jesus. Once we are "born again" saved followers
and believers in Christ Jesus, we should implement the spiritual gifts from God
to keep the Body functioning in a manner that would be pleasing to Him.
When
one experiences the filling of the Holy Spirit, they will be empowered and
controlled by the Spirit to undergo restoration, submission, and have the confidence
to share the Gospel with others. There will be in the believer filled with the
Holy Spirit a display of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). In
Conclusion, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is a mark of every born-again
Christian. We can know that the Holy Spirit indwells us if we have accepted
Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior and surrendered ourselves to God. The
influence that the Holy Spirit has on our lives directly depends on our degree
of surrender of ourselves to Christ Jesus.
