Philippians 3:13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,
Two friends are talking; one realizes the other is very down-hearted, "you look so depressed; what seems to be the problem?" asks the concerned friend. The reply came, "I'm thinking about my future." Why should thinking about your future get you so down?" the friend asked. The dispirited response came, "because I'm thinking about my past."
We all have certain
regrets about what has happened in our past. It is a solid fact of life that we
cannot change what has already happened, but we can use it as a learning
experience, and with the guiding hand of our Lord and Savior, we can use what
we learn from our past mistakes to have a brighter and more victorious future.
Someone once said that the past is a rudder to guide you, not an anchor to drag
you down. We must learn from the past but not live in the past. Satan will
always try to remind us of our past. When he does this, always remind him of
his future. Yours is a future of eternal life with the Light of the World,
Christ Jesus; his is not so bright.
Saul of Tarsus was a Pharisee of the strictest living; he had a strong belief in his orthodox Hebrew life and had an intense hatred of Christians. He was at the stoning of Stephen; even though he may not have been involved, he most likely encouraged those that did the stoning (Acts 8:1). Saul persecuted the followers and believers of Jesus until one day on the road to Damascus, where he met Jesus. That day, Jesus put his past behind him in a brilliant divine light that struck him blind but allowed him to see the world's true light, our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.
In the many writings of Paul, we see where he uses his past and his newfound faith and trust in God to change his future drastically. We will never be able to change our past, but we can learn from it. The best way to forget about the past is to focus on the future. If we do not evolve from the past to the future, we will always remain immature Christians. We can take all of our past mistakes and sins, lay them at the foot of the Cross of Calvary, and know a future that we cannot comprehend beforehand. Defeat is always temporary when we trust our future to God.
