Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
The new heart and new spirit (Ezekiel 36:26) refers to the
spiritual conversion that God promises His children in the New Covenant
(Hebrews 8:10). The old Covenant (Mosaic Covenant) came to God's people in
stone slabs; however, God writes the new Covenant on people's
"hearts." The new Covenant was not built on human works but on God
working miracles in the hearts of those that accept Christ as their Savior.
Jesus spoke of the spiritual transformation of humankind in
and through the New Covenant in His dialog with Nicodemus the Pharisee (John
3:1-15). He knew nothing of spiritual matters because his entire worldly
teachings rested on his good works. Paul referred to this new spiritual
transformation when he wrote that believers would be a new creation in Christ
Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17). The new Covenant of Christ Jesus promises us a new
nature, the old person is dead, and the new person is alive in Christ Jesus.
The new Heart God promises us is not simply heart surgery
but a radical heart transplant. He removes the heart hardened through years of
worldly living and replaces it with a brand new heart softened by the love,
grace, and mercy he demonstrated on the Cross of Calvary.
The Heart of Stone is described as an obstinate, perverse
heart not receiving any food of the Gospel from the Word of God. The stony
heart is not surrendered to the Holy Spirit but led by the evil forces of this
world. The new Covenant promises the believer the indwelling of God's Holy
Spirit to lead, guide, and direct our every step (Romans 8:9). Furthermore, the
promise includes the believer blessed with power in God's Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5;
Acts 1:8).
The Holy Spirit will not live in the old heart of stone; it
is a grimy place, barren of all good and hostile towards God. Therefore, his
very first campaign upon our worldly nature is to tear down the old house and
build a new one to Himself, that he may inhabit us unswervingly with the nature
of His Holy Spirit.
The New Covenant affords believers a heart's desire to
daily walk with God and the power to follow His will for our lives. The old
Covenant construction was on external precepts or good works. The new Covenant
is built exclusively on the results of Christ Jesus on the Cross of Calvary.
The new Covenant will bring both a desire and ability to do the will of God
(Philippians 2:12 & 13). The Old Covenant (The Law) expressed the character
of God; however, it did not provide the power to satisfy God's Law. The old
Covenant (The Law) was external, whereas the new Covenant (the wellspring of grace)
is internal (2 Corinthians 3:18). As Children of God, we are not only saved by
grace; we are endured and sustained through God's Grace as well.
