Romans 14:7-8 For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
The thesis of Romans 14-7-8 is not on the relationship of Christian to Christian but the Christian’s relationship with God. Nevertheless, the fact that we have a relationship with our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, means we have a vibrant bond with each other as Children of God. As part of the royal family of God, we are related to each other through Christ Jesus.
A re-centering takes place at the heartbeat of salvation. Previously we were centered in ourselves, but now we have our center in Christ Jesus. We do not live in or for ourselves; everything that believers and followers of Christ Jesus do affects our relationship with God. It is also important and encouraging to know that we are never alone, in life or death. Our life as Christians is not independent because everything we do touches God and those around us; we are answerable to God. Our lives as children of God have a purpose because we live not for ourselves but for others. To live a life of self-gratification or any other rationale or principle of self is distant from the will of God. For this reason, we should always consider others when we are making any decision.
Everything we are involved in directs us to Christ Jesus, our
lives with all it entails, our deaths with all its meaning and significance is
not aimed towards us, but towards God. This direction means that we should live
a life oriented towards the grace of God, understanding that all that we have,
ever will have, or ever will be, comes from our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. A
Christian life without the grace of God is like an automobile with no engine,
it might be shiny and polished, but it is going nowhere.
Since everything we are and do, we do towards God; it can only
follow that we should accept His Lordship over our lives. Everything that we
believe or hold in esteem affects our devotion to Christ Jesus; consequently,
we position ourselves in God’s hands in life or death. Because we have a Lord
in control of our being, we do not have the liberty to do as we please because
we belong to Him for all time and eternity.
The beauty of this is that we are never alone; God is always with
us. The sacrifice we make in the here and now will bring a joy that the world
cannot even conceive. We could not imagine or visualize the exultation and
joyfulness before we placed ourselves in God’s Hands. The pleasure that we can
know in this life because we put ourselves in God’s Hands will be majestic and
there will come a day that we will hear these words from our Lord and Savior
Christ Jesus: Well done my good and faithful servant, then it will have been
worth it all.
