Hebrews 9:22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
The shedding of blood for the
atonement of sin was demonstrated by God from the beginning of time on earth.
When Adam and Eve committed the first sin, God killed animals to cover the sin
of our first parents (Genesis 3:22).
God built the entire sacrificial
system under the Law of Moses on the shedding of blood in one form or another.
Yet, sadly, millions of people this day and throughout time falsely believe
that sin is atoned for by some work or good deed performed by the sinner.
Charles Spurgeon once preached a
sermon entitled "The Blood Shedding." In this sermon, he pointed out
three (3) fools. The first fool was a soldier on a field of battle that had
sustained a wound. When the Medic came to tend to his injuries, the foolish
soldier wanted to know everything about the weapon and the enemy soldier that
shot him. The second fool was the captain of a ship about to be lost to a great
storm. Instead of operating the ship's wheel and guiding it through the storm,
the foolish captain was in the chartroom looking at maps and attempting to
learn from where the storm came. The third fool was a man who had a terminal
illness and was about to face the wrath of God's judgment in death. His only
concern was how sin came into the world. The moral of these stories is that we
should focus on the solution instead of the problem.
The foundational concept of the
Mosaic Law focused on the tenet of the shedding of blood. The term "nearly
everything" in this verse would indicate that not all things were cleansed
by the shedding of blood. Some things were purified by water or fire. The
hypothesis of the shedding of blood is a fountainhead of the New Testament and
the Old Testament. The only way our sin would ever be atoned for, forgiven, was
that God Himself took on human form, living a perfect life and then shedding
His blood to cover our sins. God did this in the person of Christ Jesus, that
loved us so much (John 3:16) that he willingly and joyfully laid down His life
on the Cross of Calvary.
There is no forgiveness of sin separated
from the shed blood of Christ Jesus. The blood sacrifice of Christ covers over
all our sin past (Hebrews 9:22), present and future. No power on this earth can
take that from us (Jerimiah 31:34; Hebrews 9:15; John 10:27-29). God provides
for an irreversible and permanent covenant that He bonds by the sacrifice of
Christ Jesus on the Cross.
