Acts 4:13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished, and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.
We have read about many lives
in Christ Jesus, superbly and magnificently written. But, still, the most
extraordinary life of Christ is his living memoir, recorded in the words and
activities of the Children of God.
If we were what we confess to
be and what we ought to be, we should be clear reflections of Christ Jesus. Our
reflected likeness of Jesus should be sufficiently clear enough that the world
could not say, “well, there is a slight likeness.”
In one respect, the Jewish
leaders were somewhat off base in their analysis of Peter and John. It is a
fact of truth they were not educated men; they had not enjoyed any formal
training in the Scriptures. However, they had something that the Pharisees and
other teachers of the Law did not have, they knew the Word of God, and they had
been with Jesus, traveled with Him, dined with Him, spent their days and nights
listening to Jesus speak of the love of God for the world and eternal life.
Hence, we cannot downplay the
importance of formal education of Theology; it is a beautiful gift from God.
However, it shows in the lives of many that surrendered themselves to Christ
Jesus that a formal degree is not the only way to be a good servant of God. The
list is extensive, but a shortlist of a few who served God without a degree in
Theology follows: Charles Spurgeon, D.L. Moody, William Carey, D. Martyn
Lloyd-Jones, and Hudson Taylor. It is essential that we do not forget God used
many highly educated people. Moses, Daniel, and Paul are all illustrations from
the Bible. Augustine, Martin Luther, and Billy Graham, to name a few from later
history. It’s just as erroneous to believe that a formal education eliminates
someone for effective service as it is to think that it inevitably qualifies
someone for effective service.
All people have the
opportunity to come to Jesus and experience salvation (John 3:16); however,
only a few will do that (Matthew 7:14). Often, the only Jesus that many will
see in their lifetimes is His reflection from one of His followers. As
followers and believers in Christ, we must endeavor to make the fact that we
have been with Jesus as apparent in our lives as it was in the lives of Peter
and John.
