Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for
he who promised is faithful.
As
we look around us in the world, many people live their lives with no hope. Some
of them smile, but the look in their eyes tells another story. Some may speak,
but the melody in their voice has faded away to silence. The hope spoken of
here in this scripture verse is not an empty expectation of winning the lottery
or becoming wealthy because a rich uncle left us his entire estate. On the contrary,
the hope promised to us by God is an expectancy of the promises made to us in
His Holy Word.
Furthermore,
it is a confidence that we can depend on what God has promised us will come to
fruition. This verse assures us that we can latch on to the hope we profess
because we know that the one that made the promises is faithful to keep His
promises. The power that keeps us placing one foot in front of the other is the
validity of God’s promises in His Holy Word. No one knew this better than
David, who had every reason to lose his hope. Once God had anointed David King
of Israel, he had to wait for seven years. During these long years and
challenging times, a crazed power-hungry leader pursued him and attempted to
kill him on several occasions. He had to take shelter in empty caves up in the
mountains surrounded by those that wanted to take his life.
He
witnessed his country distraught and shattered by war, and his children turned
against Him. The ones that wanted to overcome him taunted him by asking: “where
is your God now?” (Psalm 42:10). David was surrounded by circumstances that
would make the stoutest among us all throw our hands in the air and surrender
to our enemy. However, David never surrendered to his enemies; he continued to
profess that His God was mighty and profess that “you are my hope (Psalm 71:5).
David became the greatest king Israel ever knew because he did not lose hope in
the promises that came from God.
Let
us never lose hope in the multitude of promises that we have in the Bible and
the solid gospel truth that God will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews
13:5-6; Deuteronomy 31:6 & 8; Joshua 1:5 & 9).
