Romans 7:4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.
Paul
is speaking of us dying to the Law, which means that God has released us from
the penalty of the Law. This miracle is something that we could never do on our
own. God created a final break from the Law for the followers and believers in
Christ Jesus. The Cross is not an escape from the righteousness of the Law but
the penalization of the Law. The Law does not die, but the Child of God dies to
the Law. The simple fact is that the Law no longer has any claim on the lives
of those who choose to follow Jesus. Jesus' death on the Cross caused our death
to the issue of sin.
Because
of the sacrifice on the Cross, people are free to become part of the royal
family of God. Followers of Christ are no longer answerable to the Law but
Christ. We are one with the one who God raised from the dead. It is unavoidable
that the people who become Christians prove to be fruitful because of their
salvation. Fruit is the indication of the existence of a tree or plant.
Christians will create a character that shows they are genuine followers. An
individual can't turn into a Christian and remain unimpacted by Christ's
identity and what He did. The fruit here is profound creation from the Holy
Spirit.
Those
that have died spiritually are now joined to a risen Christ and bring forth
fruit that God requires. The followers of Jesus must see themselves as being
in Christ rather than in Adam. We will produce fruit if we see ourselves as
dead, buried, and risen with Christ. This life is a dynamic that morality by
Law cannot achieve. There is a certainty of fruit production by the Spirit when
a person becomes a Christian.
In Romans 6:3-8, Paul
carefully explained that we died with Jesus and rose with Him. Although Paul
only spoke of our death to sin in Romans chapter 6, now he tells us that we are
also dead to the Law. Some folks say, well, yes, we are saved by the grace of
God; however, we must live our lives in and through the Law to please God. Followers of Christ are through with the Law.
It isn't so much for them a choice as a method of salvation. So, they don't try
to be right with God by submitting to some regulation, as the disciples of
practically all religions have done.
God
has not set us free from the Law so that we might live our lives for ourselves.
We are set free from the Law so that we might bear much fruit for the glory of
God.
