John 12:12-13 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”
In
the 12th chapter of John, verses 12-19 we find the recording of the Triumphal
entry of our Lord and Savior into Jerusalem. There are accounts in the synoptic
Gospels; however, the recording in John is the briefest of all the Gospels. The
Triumphal entry was the most public of all the occasions during the earthly
ministry of Jesus. Our Lord and Savior rode into Jerusalem that day to fulfill
a prophecy from Zechariah 9:9. The Jewish religious leaders had already
discounted Jesus as the promised coming Messiah. The majority of the Jewish
people, including His closest followers, expected a political messiah to free
them from Roman oppression.
The laying down of Palm branches in the path of someone riding into a city was a sign of welcoming someone of royalty. The people waving the Palm branches was a way to show respect and proclaim King Jesus. The shouting out of the word “Hosanna” was a term in Hebrew meaning save us. It was an ovation of praise while at the same time a request to a conquering hero to save the masses from political oppression.
This verse of Scripture shows the arrival of the long-awaited promised Messiah, first promised in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15). The people of Israel in Jerusalem that day viewed Jesus as the one to meet their worldly expectations. They saw Jesus as the one that would finally free them from Roman oppression. Consequently, there is no question about why Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem (Luke 19:27).
Jesus’ Messianic title was the King of Israel. However, there is coming a day that Jesus will be King of a kingdom that surpasses the four corners of Israel. The Messianic mission of Jesus could no longer be hidden from the masses in Jerusalem, He was fulfilling prophecies. The triumphal entry was most certainly a presentation to Jerusalem of the one promised in the Garden of Eden as the Savior of His people. The failure of the Jewish people to realize that Jesus was indeed the Promised Messiah was what would lead the same crowd a few days later to yell: “Crucify Him; Crucify Him” (Luke 23:21).
