2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
We are most certainly
dwelling in an earthly tent, a fragile and deteriorating human structure.
However, as followers and believers in Christ Jesus, we have the indwelling of
the Holy Spirit and have total and supreme assurance of eternal life with our
Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. In this verse of scripture, the Apostle Paul is
comparing our situation here in this life with our eternal life. Additionally,
he encourages all followers and believers in Christ Jesus not to lose heart and
become discouraged when trials and tribulations come our way (James 1:2).
Any pain and suffering we will go through in this life cannot compare with the greater glory that awaits us in God’s eternal kingdom because of the love of Christ Jesus. From the first breath we draw here in this life, we begin a journey towards physical death, occupying a fleshly body that will deteriorate, and this way, we will all face death in this existence. Paul uses the illustration of an earthly tent that will someday be destroyed, but a building from God awaits us that can never be demolished. As born again, washed in the Blood of Christ Jesus, saved believers and followers of Jesus, we can be comforted in knowing that this earthly life is not our permanent dwelling. This body that houses our spirits is simply a temporary covering that a permanent resurrected glorified body will someday replace.
All of this is ours through the love and grace of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus and our faith in Him as the true promised Messiah. When tribulations come our way in this life, and they will, we can be encouraged by the truth that one day we will be dressed in immortality and spend eternity praising and glorifying Christ Jesus. If you do not know Christ Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, don’t delay coming to Christ, repenting of your sins, and asking Christ Jesus to come into your life as your Lord and Savior, eternity may be closer than we think.
