Matthew 26
Sometimes referred to as Spy Wednesday
We
have looked at Palm Sunday, Holy Monday, and Holy Tuesday for the last few
days. Today we will take a look in the Bible at the events in the life of Jesus
that happened this day. The event that stands out this day in the progress of
the Holy week is the betrayal of Judas (Matthew 26:14-16). There would be some
question if the betrayal took place on Wednesday or Thursday, the day of the
last supper. However, during the Passover celebration with Jesus and his 12
Apostles was when Jesus announced that Judas had betrayed Him.
We
will never know why Judas decided to help the Temple Guards arrest Jesus and
hand Him over to the Romans. The apparent reason that stands out is the
monetary motive. However, pausing and contemplating how little money it took to
buy Judas’s betrayal creates some doubt. There seems to be no question whether
or not Judas believed Jesus was the Promised Messiah; he followed Him for His
entire earthly ministry. It could be that Judas grew disenchanted when he
realized Jesus was not going to set us a political resistance against the
Romans. Judas was a Judean, while the other eleven Apostles were from Galilee which
adds some credence to this theory.
We
will never know for sure why Judas turned on Jesus in this life. But the one
thing that we do know for sure is there was nothing that would stop our Lord
and Savior, Christ Jesus, from going to the Cross to pay our sin debt.
This
chapter also includes the anointing of Jesus at Bethany. While Jesus was
visiting Simon the Leper an unnamed woman came into the house and anointed Jesus
by pouring expensive perfume on His head. Although the Disciples were enraged
Jesus told them that she was preparing His body for burial. That act must have
confused the Apostles who did not know about the Crucifixion at this point.
