Matthew 21:23-25:46
Some
refer to Tuesday of Holy Week as “busy Tuesday". The recordings of Monday and
Wednesday are slim; however, Matthew allocates chapters 21-25 to the messages
given by Jesus on Tuesday. The unselfish sacrifice displayed by Christ Jesus
during this time was nothing short of amazing. The average person who finds out
they only have days to live will attempt to cross off some things that have
always been on their minds. Jesus imparted numerous Parables that day, and the
theme for all of them was repentance. Jesus aimed the parables toward those
that had not yet placed their faith in Him as the promised Messiah.
The
next thing on Jesus’ agenda that Tuesday was a debate with the Pharisees and
Sadducees, based on four different points. The first was a question from the
Jewish leaders asking Jesus from where he got His authority to teach and
perform miracles. Then, Jesus turned it around to them and asked them about
John’s Baptism. Then, Jesus inquired of them whether it was from heaven or of
human origin. The Jewish authorities knew that the tables would turn against
them either way. So, they respond that they did not know.
Jesus
taught three other Parables, the Two Sons: The Tenants and Wedding Banquet. In
Chapter 23, Jesus pronounces “Seven Woes,” which were most likely somber words
that fell on the ears of the Jewish leaders. We find them in Chapter 13:23-39.
As the day closes, Jesus spends what turns out to be a two (2) Chapter
discussion concerning the end times.
We
do not know when Jesus is coming back, only that He is coming back. We need to
be prepared for when that glorious day does come. We understand that all who
have placed their faith and trust in Him as their Lord and Savior will be going
home with Him.
The
selfless and astounding love shown by our Lord and Savior that day was beyond
human imagination. Jesus spent His last hours on the earth displaying His love,
grace, and mercy towards the very ones scheming to have the Romans Crucify Him.
