2 Corinthians 9:10-11 Now he who supplies seed to the Sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
The more a follower of Christ
helps other people, the more God will bless us with the means to help those
around us in need. Giving revolves around God’s all-sufficiency to increase our
facility to give. Self-interested people are not wealthy because their riches
exist for their personal needs. It is possible to give without love in our
hearts, but it is impossible to love and not give. This verse says that God
gives seed to the Sower; in other words, the source of the money a believer
gives comes from God (Isaiah 55:10). The Church at Corinth sent aid to the
Church at Jerusalem because of the famine in that land. God will enlarge our
harvest so that we can be generous to those around us that are in need (Hosea
10:12).
God tells us from this verse
that He will enrich us so that we can be generous in every way. The word
“enriched” does not suggest that God gives monetary success to mollify
self-interested cravings. The idea is that the Corinthians should be generous.
The present tense denotes that God is in the progression of enriching his
followers in their generosity. The Corinthians were channels of God’s blessing.
The person who practices grace-giving will always have the material resources
he needs.
The more we give to the needy,
the more God will enrich us so we might be able to provide even more. God does
not provide people with great riches to hoard for themselves; He gives it so we
can help others. This is not to say that there are not people out there that
hoard up riches specifically for themselves. This verse says that a giving
heart can exist if one does not have great wealth. Even though they do not have
much, the greatest givers are the ones who give from their poverty. Take the
story of the widow’s mite; Jesus said that she gave more than the rich people
that day. She gave out of her poverty, whereas the rich that day gave from
their great wealth.
