1 Corinthians 16:13-14 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.
God
did not write His commandments in His Holy Word as suggestions or
recommendations or just some sound advice. God’s commandments are not an option
like a buffet we attend where one has many selections from which we can choose.
As Christians, we must stay alert on our watches so that the evil one does not
come at an hour we were not prepared.
There
are five (5) commandments in this short verse of Scripture. First and foremost,
we must always be on guard. Satan is always on the prowl for Christians that
let their guard down. When this happens, the follower and believer in Christ
Jesus will slowly grow cold and eventually lose their desire for fellowship,
prayer, and Bible study (Matthew 26:41; Romans 13:11).
Once
a person is captivated by Christ Jesus, their hearts, mind, bodies, and souls
will belong to Jesus. Everything the servant of Christ Jesus does will be for
the honor and glory of God through Christ. When this occurs in a surrendered
Christian, the Word of God will shape our hearts and souls, and the love of God
will be visible in every step of our lives. Anything short of a hunger for
God’s Word will dampen the spiritual growth of brothers and sisters in Christ
Jesus.
The
faithful Christian loves God and other people because God pours out His love in
our hearts in and through His Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). Christian love is not
something we longed for, prayed about, or established on our own. It was a gift
of the Holy Spirit, the first heartbeat of our new lives in Christ Jesus (1
Peter 1:22; 1 Peter 4:8). This verse advises us to stay on guard and stand firm
in our beliefs and convictions. It is worthless without love as vibrant as our
guard, thoughts, and convictions can be. Everything God calls us to do, He
calls us to do it with meekness, humility, and love. The love spoken of here is
love for God and love for others.
