Acts 4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
The Apostles gathered together
to meet and worship God. They gave thanks for the sacrifice of Christ Jesus on
the Cross, that paid the penalty for our sin. The earthquake, the filling of
the Holy Spirit, and boldly speaking of God's Word all began with prayer.
Prayer is a powerful tool freely given to us by God that has the power to
change circumstances and bring revival. The followers of Jesus were given the
earthquake as a sign to show God's pleasure. The manifestation of God's Holy
Spirit was so magnificently exhibited that even the building experienced the
power of the Spirit of God. The walls didn't change, nor did the building
become an exclusive sanctified place where God's Holy Spirit permanently
dwelled.
In much the same way humans
can be shaken by God's Holy Spirit and not experience a permanent indwelling,
an eternal indwelling of the Holy Spirit occurs when we truly give our heart,
mind, body, soul, and spirit to Christ Jesus. Then, we have only to place our
faith and trust for our eternal life in the precious blood of Christ Jesus. An
old hymn asks, "what can wash away my sin, what can make me whole again.
The answer is also in the words of that hymn, "Nothing but the blood of
Jesus."
The followers of Jesus, with
the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, began to speak the word of God with power
and boldness. We need that boldness to share the gospel's message to a lost,
dark, and dying world as modern-day Christians. Today's Church needs some
shaking because it will lead to complacency when we become too comfortable with
how we have always done something. People are always seeking comfort, and
comfortable sounds great; however, it can lead to laziness. God is the provider
of love, Christ Jesus is the evidence of love, our service represents love, and
our boldness is the result of love.
Let us all pray that we will
not spend one heartbeat separated from the illumination of the love and joy of
Christ Jesus. Furthermore, let our prayers be that we will not draw a single
breath un-surrendered to our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. We were left here
in this life one second after we got saved for one reason: to be witnesses to
the Gospel of Christ Jesus. Let us all tell the world what Jesus has done for
us and what he can do for anyone that places their faith and trust in Him for
their salvation and eternal life.
